Fri. 1 November – Fri. 22 November 2024
Artists: Takeshi HYAKUTOU, Shu HONDA

CASHI is pleased to announce the hosting of a two-artist exhibition, Whispers from the Beyond, featuring works by Takeshi HYAKUTOU and Shu HONDA, from Friday, November 1st to Friday, November 22nd, 2024.

The term “Yūkai” (the spirit world) is said to refer to the realm between life and death, where souls temporarily reside after passing away. In contrast, “Reikai” (the afterlife) is understood as the eternal resting place for the deceased, consisting of two distinct realms: Tenkai (Heaven or the Celestial Realm), where benevolent spirits dwell, and Jigoku (Hell or the Underworld), home to malevolent spirits.

Both Hyakutou and Honda capture landscapes imbued with eerie, supernatural elements found in the outskirts of Japan. The exhibition title, Whispers from the Beyond, reflects how their works seem to preserve fleeting messages from the spirit world in the form of paintings and photographs.

Hyakutou, born in Gunma in 1980, is an artist who researches and photographs landscapes filled with industrial waste in what he calls “junkyards” on the outskirts of towns. His notable exhibitions include his solo show “Tlön” (Token Art Center, Tokyo, 2023), “VOCA 2018: The Vision of Contemporary Art” (The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, 2018), and “Impurities and Immunity” (Tokyo Arts and Space Hongo, Tokyo, 2017).
Honda, born in Saitama in 1997, is an artist who warmly embraces the existence of yokai (Japanese spirits) from a young age, discovering and depicting their presence through his artwork. His body of work, which focuses on yokai as a motif, garnered attention at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduation Exhibition in 2024.

We invite you to experience this unique world where the visible and invisible realms intersect through the eyes of these two artists.
